CHECKLIST (What to bring to my gig?)

The ultimate DJ’s Survival Guide: What to Pack (and Prepare) for Your Next Set

Ah, the DJ life—full of beats, basslines, and… logistics? Yes, logistics. As much as we’d all love to just show up, plug in, and play, the truth is: preparation is everything. Forget the essentials, and your gig might hit a sour note before you’ve even pressed play.

Fear not! Here’s your ultimate DJ checklist, with a few pro tips to ensure you’re always ready to rock the booth—and look professional while doing it.

The DJ Gig Essentials Checklist

1. USB – Your Treasure Chest

Without your USB, you’re just another person standing awkwardly behind a DJ booth. Make sure it’s organized with your best tracks, and triple-check it’s working properly.

2. Backup USB – For Peace of Mind

Because technology is unpredictable. A second USB might seem extra, but when your main one fails (and it will, someday), you’ll thank yourself.

3. Headphones – Your Lifeline

Not just any headphones, your headphones. You know how they sound, how they feel, and they’ve never let you down. Don’t forget them—or their cable.

4. Big Jack Adapter – The Tiny Savior

The tiniest piece of gear is often the most important. Without it, your headphones are useless. Bring one. Or two. Seriously.

5. Ethernet Cable – Just in Case

Need to connect to the venue’s network? Last-minute live-stream setup? Having an ethernet cable in your bag makes you look like the prepared pro you are.

Don’t Forget: Be Professional Before You Even Arrive

1. Send Your Press Pack and Press Kit in Advance

Your press pack is your DJ résumé. It gives organizers everything they need to promote you: bio, photos, social links, and more. Didn’t send one? That’s a rookie mistake.

2. Invoice First, Spin Later

You’re a professional DJ, and professional DJ's get paid. Make sure your official invoice has been sent to the organizer before the event. If you’re unsure how to create one, we cover that in the Master Course, too. (Spoiler: it’s easier than you think!)

3. Keep Your Music Legal

It’s simple: buy your tracks legally. Whether from Beatport, Bandcamp, or another source, your music library should be legit. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it also keeps you out of trouble. Plus, you’ll feel way cooler knowing you’ve supported your fellow artists. Also don't forget to get your official DJ license (UNISONO in Belgium).

4. Know the Key Players

  • Who booked you?
  • Who’s running the event?
  • Who’s on the lineup?
Introduce yourself, shake hands, and thank the organizer. Pro tip: being professional and approachable can open doors to future gigs.

Double-Check the Venue Setup

Don’t assume the venue has everything you need or placed the equipment you asked for in your rider. Call ahead and confirm the equipment. In rare cases, be ready to bring your own gear. And yes, test everything before you start your set.

Pro Tips for a Smooth Night

  • Stay Cool Under Pressure: If something goes wrong, handle it like a pro. The crowd follows your energy.
  • Network with Fellow DJs: Be friendly—it’s a small world, and connections matter.
  • Thank Everyone: Gratitude goes a long way. Thank the staff, the organizer, and even the sound guy.
